Free Moving Tips

A few practical reminders to help you prepare for moving day. No signup, no download — just useful guidance you can read in a few minutes.

Before you move

  • Set a realistic moving budget early — include removalists, cleaning, packing supplies, utility connection, and a small buffer for surprises.
  • Compare quotes from at least three removalists if you're hiring help, and book early for popular dates.
  • Create one moving folder (digital or paper) for quotes, contracts, receipts, and important documents.
  • Declutter before you pack. Fewer boxes means lower cost and less to unpack.
  • If you're renting, re-read your lease for notice period, bond conditions, and exit-clean requirements.

Packing tips

  • Label every box clearly with the room and a short list of contents.
  • Pack heavy items (books, tools) in small boxes and light items in large boxes.
  • Wrap fragile items individually and mark those boxes 'Fragile — this side up'.
  • Keep important documents (IDs, passports, contracts, medical) with you — never on the truck.
  • Pack an essentials box for the first night: toiletries, medications, chargers, a change of clothes, snacks, kettle, basic tools.

Utilities and address changes

  • Book internet installation 2–4 weeks ahead — it's the service most likely to be delayed.
  • Schedule electricity, gas, and water disconnect/connect so your last day at the old place lines up with your first day at the new one.
  • Set up mail redirection with your postal service from your moving date.
  • Update your address with banks, insurance, super/retirement funds, employer, government records, and subscriptions — treat each one as a separate task.
  • If you have a driver licence or vehicle registration, update it with the relevant authority after the move.

Cleaning and handover

  • If you're renting, the kitchen (oven, rangehood, cupboards) and bathrooms (grout, screens, exhaust fans) are usually the most scrutinised areas in a bond inspection.
  • Steam-clean carpets if your lease requires it, and keep the receipt.
  • Wipe down walls, skirting boards, light switches, windows, tracks, and flyscreens.
  • Don't forget outdoor areas: lawn, balcony, garage, and any rubbish removal.
  • Photograph every room after cleaning — it's useful evidence for bond and inspection disputes.

Moving day reminders

  • Do a final walkthrough of every cupboard, drawer, and outdoor area before you leave.
  • Photograph electricity, gas, and water meters at both properties.
  • Confirm everything is unloaded and undamaged before you pay or tip the removalists.
  • Hand over keys as agreed and confirm receipt in writing or by message.
  • Once you arrive, test power, water, gas, and internet straight away so any issues can be logged the same day.
